A device for controlling mechanically the rate of supply of feed.

Feeders are the commonest form of flow controller in [ore] dressing plants. The elements are a surge container and a transporting device of controllable rate. The surge container may be a bin, tank, hopper, or simply an open space on the ground ... The transporting device may be of any form whatsoever [as long as] the flow rate through or across it is controllable.

Le matériel destiné à introduire au stade primaire un tout-venant en trémie dans un circuit de manutention prend le nom d'extracteur. Si son rôle consiste à soutirer de façon continue, à débit régulier souvent réglable en marche, un matériau pour alimenter un appareil de préparation, on l'appelle distributeur ou alimentateur. La même distinction peut être faite aux stades intermédiaires de la préparation.

Les distributeurs permettent de doser et de mesurer la quantité de produit distribué; c'est pourquoi ils sont souvent appelés distributeurs-doseurs.
